BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Smith received his B.A in Geology from the University of Montana, his M.S. in Geology from New Mexico State University and his Ph.D. in Geology from Washington State University. He taught geology, environmental science and STEM education for over 15 years at four universities prior to coming to Chatham University. Dr. Smith also coordinated educational and outreach programs for a Soil & Water Conservation District and served as Park Ranger for the National Park Service. Dr. Smith’s ongoing work is centered on the human impacts to watersheds and educating the public about these impacts. These activities began as a founding member then expanded with his elections to the board of directors, vice president, and president of the Shenango River Watchers (SRW), Inc., a nonprofit watershed group in Hermitage, PA. Dr. Smith has also conducted research that investigates the controls of river system development through geologic time and soil fertility in household raised-bed subsidence gardens on San Salvador, Bahamas.
